Traveling With Your Pet

When you are planning your family vacation, where will your pet stay? It will be important to decide on your pet’s care, whether you take him along, leave him at home, choose to board him or have a pet sitter. There are some important things to consider when making this decision. When making the choice of what to do with your pet/pets, you will need to take into consideration your pet’s personality, how long you will be gone and how far away you will be.

Below are some tips and suggestions if you are leaving your furry friend behind:

  • Check with your veterinarian or other pet owners to locate a reputable boarding facility or pet sitter.
  • Should you decide to board your pet, you may wish to visit the kennel to meet the staff and check-out the safety and cleanliness of the facility.
  • If you choose a pet sitter, have her/him come to your home to see how your pet interacts with the sitter on Fido’s “turf”.
  • Be sure your pet has all required vaccinations.
  • Make reservations early, as many facilities and pet sitters can be booked {especially during the holidays}.
  • Should your pet require any medications, make certain that you have enough and that the instructions are clear and complete. Don’t forget to leave your veterinarian’s name and telephone number {as well as an emergency number}.
  • Make sure you leave a telephone number where you can be reached.
  • Make certain that your pet has a collar with identification tags on it. For a cat, consider a break-away type of safety collar.

HERE ARE SOME THINGS TO CONSIDER IF YOU ARE TAKING YOUR PET WITH YOU:

  • Call ahead and make sure your pet is welcome wherever you will be staying {including hotels, parks and homes}.
  • Make certain your pet has all required vaccinations {take proof!}. Some campgrounds may require a current health certificate. Please check ahead.
  • Bring along a supply of your pet’s medications {if needed}, food and treats. If you have room, you may want to consider packing your pet’s bedding and a few favorite toys. Your pet can be stressed by the change in his/her routine.
  • Absolutely make sure your pet has a collar with appropriate identification on it. {Make sure your telephone number has the area code on it!} Remember to keep your pet on a leash or in a crate at all times. This is especially important when you are driving in the car. Your dog/cat may want to be the first one out the door when it is opened, so use caution.
