HOUSEHOLD DANGERS
We all know that we should “childproof” our homes, but did you know that it is also a good idea to “pet proof” our houses as well? Cats and dogs are naturally curious and love to explore their environment. Your four-legged friend does not know what is safe and what is not. It is up to us, as responsible pet owners, to make our homes safe for our pets.
HERE IS A LIST OF BASIC TIPS TO HELP MAKE YOUR HOME SAFE FOR YOUR PET. [Please remember that there may be more dangers not included on this list.]
· Make certain that if you want to open your windows, they have screens in them [and are the screens secure?].
· Plastic bags and shopping bags with handles can be dangerous, as pets can suffocate or get a bag handle caught around their neck.
· If your home has a deck or balcony, please be mindful that kittens or puppies are curious and could fall.
· As puppies and kittens lose baby teeth and get their adult teeth, they LOVE to chew on whatever they can find, so keep electrical cords out of their reach [or at least unplug them when not in use]. Also don’t leave small children’s toys or easily swallowed objects lying around.
· Be mindful of a burning candle, iron, hot stove, space heater or a lit fireplace.
· Many houseplants, including dieffenbachia, spider plant, elephant ear, poinsettia, holly and mistletoe are poisonous if eaten. Remove them or put them out of reach.
· Cats love a warm car engine on cooler days so remember to honk your horn before you drive away to make certain that your cat is not in or under your vehicle.
· Pets like the taste and smell of antifreeze [it tastes sweet to them]. Antifreeze is especially toxic for cats and dogs. If you suspect your animal has ingested antifreeze, call your veterinarian IMMEDIATELY. Windshield washer fluid is also dangerous, so wipe up any spills.
· Be sure to close the lids of your washer and dryer, your cat may decide to crawl in and become trapped.
· Keep the toilet lid closed, a curious pet could actually fall in and drown.
· Be mindful of shampoos, medicines, lotions, cosmetics and other similar items.
· If you have your lawn treated with chemicals, keep your pets off the grass for the recommended time.
· Keep hot tubs and swimming pools covered so your pet does not fall in. [Or in the case of a swimming pool, teach your dog to swim to the steps, so he can get himself out if he happens to fall/jump in!]
· Many cats love to play with yarn, string, rubber bands and aluminum foil. These things can be extremely harmful if swallowed!
· Keep the trashcans away from your pet! Many a pet has gotten into trouble by eating the contents of a knocked–over trashcan!
